WORLD'S ENVIRONMENT DAY,5 JUNE.."Planet Earth is our shared island, let us join forces to protect it."

WED, 07/05/14

Greening the Blue is today launching it's campaign in support of World Environment Day 2014.

The theme for WED 2014 is Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the context of climate change. We are therefore inviting every UN staff member to raise their voice, not the sea level, by submitting 150 words about your experience of SIDS in relation to climate change.

If you live or work on a small island, or have visited an island that you loved, or have tales to tell about sea level rise, or stories about how a small island is adapting to climate change - we want to hear from you.

Post your story (no more than 150 words) to the Greening the Blue Facebook wall, or email us - and feel free to share a photo if you have one.

The best entry will receive a prize as small and beautiful as the islands at risk. The winner will be announced on 5 June, World Environment Day on Greening the Blue

You can keep track of the stories we're receiving on the Greening the Blue Facebook page and share them with you friends.

WED 2014

The objective of WED 2014 is to help build momentum towards the Third International Conference on SIDS in September and encourage a greater understanding of the importance of SIDS and of the urgency to help protect the islands in the face of growing risks and vulnerabilities, particularly as a result of climate change.

The global sea level has risen by about 10 to 25 cm (up to about 10 inches) over the last 100 years as a result of rising seawater temperatures and the melting of the ice sheets. Small Island Developing States are most vulnerable to rising sea levels and the effects are being felt around the globe.

Visit the World Environment Day website for more information, to register an activity or find out what's happening in your area.

SMALL ISLAND DEVELOPING STATES (SIDS)

We're particularly keen to reach out to those with a connection with SIDS.
