Kochadaiiyaan (English: The king with a long, curly mane[5]) is a 2014 IndianTamil motion capture 3D computer-animated period film directed bySoundarya R. Ashwin and written by K. S. Ravikumar. The film featuresRajinikanth enacting and voicing three lead roles, whilst Deepika Padukone,R. SarathkumarAadhiShobanaRukmini VijayakumarJackie Shroff andNassar enacting and voice supporting their respective characters. The film has cinematography handled by Padmesh whereas the music and original score is composed by A. R. Rahman.

Shooting for the film was completed by the end of February 2013, while post-production work took place in the United StatesHong KongChina[3][6][7] and Faceware Technologies in the United Kingdom.[8] The film released worldwide on 23 May 2014[9] in Tamil as well as other languages including HindiTelugu,JapaneseBhojpuriBengaliMarathiPunjabi, and English.[10][11]

Overall, the film received mixed critical reception with most critics noting the lack of standard in the motion capturing and animation in comparison to other films that have used the technology,[12] although performances, background score and screenplay generally received praise.[12] Commercially, the film was a major success after receiving a grand opening in India and overseas.

or rendering, often they even appeared slightly out of focus on screen. Glitches, perhaps, but the curious thing is that none of those issues affected Rajnikanth's appearance." He added, "I've been waiting for Kochadaiiyaan for years, since the film was a rumor, but with all of the hype, delays, and eventual disappointing final product, I feel that my enthusiasm was at best wasted and at worst betrayed. Rajnikanth is an international treasure, a film hero like none ever seen, and Kochadaiiyaan is a project beneath his abilities and less than he deserves."[146] Abraham Richard of Times of Oman felt, "Despite the technical flaws Rajni and Soundarya deserve to be applauded for their daring effort and initiative for trying to push the industry to the next level. Whatever said and done this movie is worth a watch especially for the efforts put in. Kochadaiiyaan will make a mark in history of film making in India as this is the first time that a huge star has allowed himself to be a hero in a full length animated movie.[147]

Box Office

The Hindi version of the film had opened on a dull note but the Tamil version opened to packed houses in South India.[148]Cities like Hyderabad and Bangalore released both the Hindi version and Tamil version and while the Hindi version hardly had an audience the Tamil version was housefull. The film had very few shows outside the metros. At theatrical centres in North like JaipurKanpur and Lucknow have very few screenings. The release was much strong in Mumbai and Pune where screens were relatively greater.[149]Kochadaiiyaan on its opening day had collected a total amount, estimate 140 million(US$2.4 million) including all the shares.[150]

Sequel

Main article: Rana (film)

Rana, another historical film with Rajinikanth in the lead role, was originally in production before Kochadaiiyaan. Rajinikath said, "I like stories that are about kings and queens and used to read stories that began with 'Once Upon A Time…'; I haven't done a film based on folklore and that's why I wanted to do Rana."[151] It went into production and principal photography began on 29 April 2011.[152] However, while filming, Rajinikanth became ill and production on Rana was temporarily halted.[18] His treatment lasted till June 2011, which made all attempts at restarting production unsuccessful.[153]

After his recovery, Rajinikanth felt that his body would not be able to facilitate the stress that filming required. However, when the producers suggested him that it was possible to make the film without causing harm to Rajinikanth, he agreed to star in the film.[14] The newly established film, titled Kochadaiiyaan, had a different story and was later revealed by Soundarya, the director of the film, to be a prequel to Rana.[25] Meanwhile, Rana was believed to be shelved until Ravikumar stated that he would continue filming at a later date.[154]

In April 2014, production on Rana resumed following the completion of Kochadaiiyaan
