As week 1 ended in Bigg Boss, a lot of stories unfolded. The happy
family is taken by surprise as two new members of the Secret Society,
Deepshikha Nagpal and Preetam Singh enter their humble abode.
While
none can predict the plans and schemes that Bigg Boss has in store for
the passengers, we know that turbulence is about to hit this smooth
sailing flight. Will the members of the secret society succeed in breaching the positivity and creating rifts between the passengers?
The
anxious wait of the passengers to hear the distinguished voice of Bigg
Boss came to an end as Bigg Boss addressed the passengers directly for
the first time. But with sugar came the spice as Bigg Boss announced the
first 'team task' for all the passengers.
With Deepshika and
Preetam as captains, the passengers were divided into two teams.
Deepshika chose Karishma, Diandra, Minisha, Sushant, Upen and Aarya;
while Preetam chose Sukirti, Sony, Natasa, Puneet, Praneet and Gautam.
The
task at hand was 'Hijack', where Preetam's team would occupy seats
placed in the garden and Deepshika's team would need to force them out
of the seats. The task had no rules except for the use of physical force
and the reward for the winning team would be admission in the main Bigg

In the developed world, smartphones are ubiquitous. They’re so
common, many device makers have given up on selling non-smartphones
entirely. But that’s not the case in the developing world, where
consumers are still in transition. This market opportunity has often
been referred to as "the next billion," and many companies have made it
their priority to focus on it. Research firm IDC reports
that in India, smartphone sales have exploded 186 percent in growth in
just the last year, with 78 percent of sales coming from devices priced
below $200.
Nokia has made the next billion a big part of its business for years,
first with the Asha line of phones, and now with its Android-powered Nokia X series.
Nokia’s new parent, Microsoft, has also pushed its Windows Phone
platform even lower in price in order to capture the rapid growth of
emerging markets. Mozilla is doing the same with its Firefox OS platform.
Android has been popular in emerging markets for a long time, but
Google first expressed explicit interest in this market when it launched
Android 4.4 KitKat last year.
It was designed specifically so it would run well on the lower-cost
hardware that usually finds its way to emerging markets. At its launch
last fall, Google's senior vice president, Sundar Pichai, said: "As we
get on our journey to reach the next billion people, we want to do it on
the latest version of Android." And now, with Android One, Google’s showing that Pichai’s vision has legs. Android One ensures a uniformly decent experience on low-end devices
Android One is a reference platform — it’s a set of rules that device
makers can follow to make low-cost phones. It makes it easier for
manufacturers to develop and produce devices, because Google is doing
all of the hard work figuring out materials costs. For Google, it
ensures that even low-end devices can run its software and run it well,
providing everyone with a uniformly decent experience. Where KitKat was
Google’s effort to address the software issues on low-end devices,
Android One is now doing the same for hardware. The company calls it a
"a comprehensive solution to address the mobile computing needs of those
in emerging markets."
The first Android One devices will be produced by Indian
manufacturers this fall. An example device that Google demonstrated this
week featured a 4.5-inch display, support for two SIM cards at once (an
important feature for many in developing markets), an SD card slot, and
an FM radio. Critically, it is said to cost less than $100 to make, far
less than the cost of most smartphones sold in the developed world.
That means the Android One handsets will likely retail for less than
$200 unlocked, competitive with other devices in their target markets.
Google isn’t just controlling the hardware with Android One, either —
it’s also making sure the devices run the latest versions of Android
and aren’t encumbered by unnecessary software additions, which could
endanger whatever performance advantage KitKat had given them. Android
One phones will run stock Android, get automatic updates, and access
Google’s Play Store for apps and media content. Controlling hardware and software on Android devices is a big shift for Google
For Google, a hardware reference platform and far-reaching software
rules represent a big shift from how it’s handled Android in the past.
The company’s Nexus program has provided developers with fast updates
and a "pure" Android experience, but those devices have never been
marketed broadly to consumers. The Google Play Edition program has
offered stock software with more hardware choice, but so far, most GPE
phones have been expensive. In order to make a low-end phone work as
well as a high-end one, Google’s finding that it has to turn the screws a
little harder than it would for a big, fast Samsung or HTC.
Although KitKat may be starting to have an impact, low-end Android
phones in developing markets are still often a mess. Many run outdated
versions of Android and don’t have access to the full suite of services
and apps in Google’s Play Store. According to IDC, the top-selling
phones in India are Samsung’s Galaxy Star Pro and Galaxy S Duos 2, which
have small, low-resolution displays and run versions of Android that
are at least two generations old. India’s other market leaders, Micromax
and Karbonn, count low-end devices as their top sellers as well.
Unsurprisingly, both of those companies have been tapped for the Android
One program. Motorola proved that user experience on a low-end device matters
Motorola is an early example of how important a good user experience
is to the low end of the market: its stripped-down, low-cost Moto G and Moto E
smartphones run stock versions of the latest Android builds and provide
a user experience not seen before at this price level. They were quick successes,
rapidly outpacing the meager sales of Motorola’s higher-end Moto X and
becoming the most popular smartphones the company has ever produced.
Nokia’s, Microsoft’s, and Mozilla’s biggest challenges in developing
markets have been beating the onslaught of cheap Android phones from
Asian manufacturers. In the case of Nokia and Microsoft, they could
point to the much better and much more cohesive user experience that
their devices provided. But with Android One, that advantage likely
won’t last — provided Google is committed to ensuring the experience
stays consistent.
Google’s already winning the market-share wars in both developed and
developing countries. With Android One, it’s poised to keep its lead and
take the lion’s share of the next billion, too. Lead image composite by T.C. Sottek
After announcing it first back at I/O 2014, Google today finally launched the first Android One devices in India.
The first three phones to be launched are the Karbon Sparkle V,
Micromax Canvas A1, and Spice Dream UNO. The Dream UNO is the cheapest
at INR6,299 ($103), while the Sparkle V costs INR6,399 ($105) and the
Canvas A1 costs INR6,499 ($106).
All three phones are being sold exclusively through three different
online stores. The Karbonn Sparkle V will be sold on Snapdeal, the
Micromax Canvas V1 through Amazon, and the Spice Dream UNO through
Flipkart.
In terms of specifications, all three phones are based on Google's
reference design, and as such are pretty much identical. All three have a
4.5-inch, 854x480 resolution IPS display, MediaTek MT6582 SoC with
1.3GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU and Mali 400 MP2 GPU, 1GB RAM, 4GB
storage space with microSD card slot, 5 megapixel rear camera, 2
megapixel front camera, FM radio, dual SIM support, and replaceable
1,700mAh battery. The only differences will be in the design and minor
software enhancements.
The best thing about these phones is that they all run stock version
of Android, 4.4.4 KitKat in this case. The phones will get OS updates
directly from Google for two years since launch. These phones will also
be first in line with the Nexus devices to get Android L, or any future
release.
Google also has done partnership with Airtel, India's biggest mobile
carrier. Users on Airtel will be able to download Android updates for
free (that is, without being charged for data downloads) for the first
six months. Airtel users will also be able to download up to 200MB worth
of apps from the Google Play Store every month, which won't be counted
towards their mobile data.
Another interesting feature is that Android One users will be able to
download and watch YouTube videos offline, something not yet available
on any Android device. They will also get one year free subscription to
content on Google Play Newsstand. Apart from this, the individual online
stores selling these phones also have additional offers available,
including financing options, discounts on accessories, and free memory
card.
India is just the first country to receive Android One. Google will
be bringing Android One devices to other countries, including Indonesia,
the Philippines and South Asia (Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri
Lanka) by the end of the year, with more countries to follow in 2015.
There will also be other Androd OEMs, who will be joining Micromax,
Karbonn, and Spice later. These include Acer, Alcatel Onetouch, ASUS,
HTC, Intex, Lava, Lenovo, Panasonic, Xolo, and Qualcomm.
Android One is a great initiative by Google to bring smartphones to
the masses. But with devices like Xiamomi Redmi 1s and Moto E (which are
similarly priced and offer better specs) already on the market, not to
mention the lack of availability of these phones outside the
aforementioned online retailers, we would have to wait and see how
successful it is.
Google has launched the first family of Android One
phones in India, saying the move is part of a "larger initiative to
bring high-quality smartphones to as many people as possible."
The search giant announced the first Android One smartphones - the Karbonn Sparkle V, Micromax Canvas A1, and Spice Dream Uno
- will be available from their respective online retail partners in
India from 3:30pm on Monday, with physical retail store availability in
early October.
The Karbonn Sparkle V will be available in Magnum Blue, Mild Grey, Wild Red and Pearl White colour variants exclusively via Snapdeal at Rs. 6,399, and the Spice Dream Uno will be available in Black and White colour variants exclusively via at Flipkart at Rs. 6,299. The Micromax Canvas A1 will be available in Black and White colour variants exclusively via Amazon, priced at Rs. 6,499.
Google
says the Android One phones offer a high-quality experience, running
the Android 4.4 KitKat. The company added these phones will be the first
to receive the Android L release, and update that Google says will
offer the new "material design, improved battery life, enhanced security
features, and smarter notifications."
All
3 smartphones bear similar features hardware specifications, as well as
"features particularly important to Indians" - dual SIM card slots, a
FM radio tuner, and a microSD card slot for additional storage. Google
apps such as Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Google Search, and Google
Translate will come pre-loaded on the phones.
Apart from those
listed above, common specifications of the Micromax Canvas A1, Karbonn
Sparkle V, and Spice Dream Uno include: a 4.5-inch (480x854 pixels) IPS
FWVGA display; 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor; 1GB of RAM, 4GB of
inbuilt storage; expandable storage support via microSD card (up to
32GB); a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash; a 2-megapixel front
camera; Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, GPRS/ EDGE, 3G, and a 1700mAh battery.
Google
also announced that Airtel is offering a promotion to reduce data costs
for those who buy Android One phones. With an Airtel SIM card, Android
One users will get free over-the-air (OTA) updates, and 200MB per month
worth of app downloads from Google Play for the first six months - all
without counting toward their mobile data plan. Additionally, Google is
touting the a data compression feature on Android One's Chrome browser.
The search giant also announced that in the coming weeks the YouTube
app will get offline video playback in India, allowing users to store
videos via Wi-Fi on their Android device, and watch them later without
data connectivity.
Sundar Pichai, Google Senior Vice President of
Android, Chrome & Apps, announced an expanded set of hardware
partners for the Android One initiative, including Acer, Alcatel
Onetouch, Asus, HTC, Intex, Lava, Lenovo, Panasonic, and Xolo, as well
as chipmaker Qualcomm. The company also announced that Android One
phones will launch in Indonesia, the Philippines, and additional
countries in South Asia by the end of the year.

It’s tough being a female actor in Bollywood. Even if on screen this
is the year of the Girls, off screen we continue to live up to our
(miss) marketing pitch of No Country for Girls… heroines included.
On Sunday, Bollywood’s Number 1 female star Deepika Padukone declared
twitter war on a leading newspaper for publishing a gallery of
tasteless images featuring her. The web post titled “OMG: Deepika
Padukone’s Cleavage Show” were all top-angle shots, unaesthetic and
definitely put up with the intention to outrage the actor’s modesty.
Deepika’s retort: “YES! I am a Woman. I have breasts AND a cleavage! You got a problem!!??” was no-nonsense and resounding.
While Deepika Padukone amassed a thunderous wave of online support from her film industry colleagues,
thought leaders and fans, predictably there are some backstage
naysayers who see everything with Bollywood tinted glasses of cynicism.
Just like Preity Zinta’s complaint of misbehaviour of her ex boyfriend
and Kings XI Punjab co owner Ness Wadia, was labelled as a “fading
star’s meltdown” and “publicity stunt”, there are some who believe
Deepika’s reaction is a “well timed stunt” to bolster the collections of
her just released Finding Fanny and also to propel the chances of her
big Diwali extravaganza Happy New Year co-starring Shah Rukh Khan, if
you please.
Talk of synchronicity! So let me get this right. If a female actor
(who mind you, is at the top of her game) speaks up against
objectification at the time of her film’s release then its publicity.
And if she does so when her film is not releasing then again it’s for
publicity because she is seeking a career revival and needs to be in
circulation. So basically, a female actor can’t express her opinion
about herself and her portrayal. Ever. Talk about diabolical. Take a
bow, misogyny.
If a top Bollywood female star has to go through the line of fire for
taking a stand for herself then can you imagine what it’s like for
regular girls in our country who are not as empowered? No Country for
Girls, like I said.

If this is a publicity stunt then well, it’s a great one because it
once again exposes our hypocrisy in how we treat our women, especially
those who speak continued
